Common Types of Cockroaches
There are hundreds of species of cockroaches, and the German cockroach is generally the most common. However, American cockroaches, brown-banded cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, Cuban cockroaches, flying cockroaches, and death hand cockroaches are also common pest roaches here in the Southwest.
What Cockroaches Look Like
Cockroaches have flat-oval-shaped bodies, are shiny in appearance, oily to the touch, and can range from a half-inch to two inches, or sometimes even longer. While many species of cockroaches have wings, they rarely fly and cannot fly for long distances. They have six spiny long legs and can quickly run across virtually any surface. Female cockroaches are usually larger than males, and lay brown egg sacs called oothecae. Young cockroach nymphs are usually pale in color without fully developed wings. Cockroaches who have grown to adulthood may be reddish, gray, black, or brown.
Health Risks of Cockroaches
Cockroaches are both unpleasant and unsanitary. In addition to being ugly, they can pose serious health concerns when they come inside. Cockroach droppings and allergens can trigger asthma and allergies, especially in infants, small children, and the elderly, and can contaminate foods and food preparation services. Cockroaches have been found to have spread at least 33 kinds of food-poisoning bacteria, including salmonella and e. coli, 6 parasitic worms, and 8 other types of human pathogens. Cockroaches may also cause allergic reactions if they come in contact with human skin, due to the microbes and irritants that adhere to their bodies.
Cockroach Removal Service
While cockroaches can be accidentally introduced into your home in storage items, outdoor furniture, or potted plants, they most commonly make their way in through the outdoors, usually through drains and drain vents. Roaches are usually nocturnal, and are most likely to come out at night.
Cockroach extermination begins with inspecting your property to determine what type of cockroach is infesting your property and how the cockroach gained entry. We offer these inspections, and once we figure this out, we will apply pesticide to the affected areas to achieve extermination goals and will make sanitation recommendations designed to reduce potential cockroach infestations on your property.
Pesticide Cockroach Extermination Treatments
Unfortunately, there is no single pesticide that will work on all cockroaches, which makes proper identification of the infesting species critical for proper cockroach extermination.
We have found that LambdaStar Ultracap 9, D-Fense SC, or Cyper WSP offer great long-term protection against cockroaches, while Tekko Pro, Orthene PCO, Spectre PS, Advion WDG, and Vendetta Anti-Cockroach can work well when used against a correctly identified cockroach species.
Cockroach Prevention
Cockroach infestations can usually be prevented through improved sanitation. Storing food securely, promptly cleaning dirty dishware, properly disposing of all food waste, keeping pet foods sealed, discarding foods that are no longer fresh, and regularly taking out the trash will deny cockroaches the food sources they seek. Reducing moisture around sinks, tubs, toilets, and other water sources will deprive cockroaches of water sources. We are the experts in cockroach treatment and pest-proofing, and we will help you keep cockroaches out of your home.
